What’s in Hairspray? We Checked 30 Formulas for Propellants, Alcohol and Fragrance

The short answer: HFC-152a dominated this 30-brand sample, but packaging format did not reliably answer the alcohol question. Four of the six pump or non-aerosol sprays listed a named denatured-alcohol ingredient; one more listed only Alcohol, without specifying denaturation.
- 21 of 30 listed HFC-152a, including two formulas that also listed dimethyl ether.
- 22 of 30 put a named denatured-alcohol ingredient first; another five put it second. One additional formula put unspecified Alcohol first.
- 29 of 30 published Fragrance or Parfum in the checked ingredient list.
“Aerosol,” “non-aerosol,” “alcohol-free,” and “unscented” answer different questions. To make those labels easier to separate, HomeWise checked one finishing hairspray listed on August 24, 2026 from each of 30 brands and recorded the package format, named propellant, position of Alcohol Denat, fragrance disclosure, and the brand’s own hold wording.

What the 30 dated formula records showed
| Mutually exclusive propellant class | Products | Share of sample | What this means |
|---|---|---|---|
| HFC-152a only | 19 | 63.3% | The published list named hydrofluorocarbon 152a and did not name DME. |
| DME only | 2 | 6.7% | The published list named dimethyl ether and did not name HFC-152a. |
| HFC-152a + DME | 2 | 6.7% | Both named propellants appeared in the published list. |
| No propellant listed | 6 | 20.0% | All six were sold as pump or non-aerosol sprays. |
| Unnamed non-greenhouse-gas propellant | 1 | 3.3% | Dove described its propellant but did not name the gas in the displayed list. |
Across overlapping ingredient counts, 21 products (70%) named HFC-152a and four (13.3%) named DME. Those figures overlap because Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode and Wella EIMI Stay Firm listed both.
The complete 30-brand audit
“Fragrance listed” means the checked source displayed Fragrance or Parfum. It does not measure scent strength. “Alcohol entry position” records the source order of Alcohol Denat, Alcohol Denatured, Denatured Alcohol or SD Alcohol 40-B. Design Essentials published only Alcohol, so its denaturation status is unspecified. These positions are not concentration measurements.

Finding 1: HFC-152a dominated the aerosol sample
Nineteen products used HFC-152a without DME, while two more paired HFC-152a with DME. Only Pantene Flexible Hold Alcohol Free and Color Wow Cult Favorite were DME-only among the checked formulas.
This is a formulation audit, not an emissions ranking. The research records the ingredient words brands currently publish; it does not measure how much propellant a can contains, total lifecycle impact, spray efficiency, or performance.
Finding 2: A pump bottle did not mean alcohol-free
All six pump or non-aerosol products avoided a named compressed-gas propellant, but four listed a named denatured-alcohol ingredient. Suave, Vanicream and Davines put it first; Kenra put it second. Design Essentials put Alcohol first without specifying denaturation. Ouidad listed no named denatured-alcohol ingredient. A pump still did not establish an alcohol-free formula.
The reverse assumption also failed. Pantene’s aerosol listed DME as its propellant but did not list Alcohol Denat. Its published list does include Benzyl Alcohol later, which is why this audit distinguishes named denatured-alcohol ingredients from Benzyl Alcohol and the unspecified Alcohol in Design Essentials. Ingredients containing the word “alcohol” are not all classified together.
Finding 3: Fragrance wording was nearly universal
Twenty-nine of 30 checked lists displayed Fragrance or Parfum. Vanicream was the lone exception. That makes it the only row in this sample where a reader trying to avoid the generic fragrance disclosure can confirm both a pump format and no Fragrance/Parfum term in the current brand list.
This is not a smell test and does not prove that every other product smells strong. Ingredient disclosure and sensory intensity are different questions.
Two official pages deserve an extra source check
L’Oréal Elnett: unscented wording, but “Fragrance” in the list
The checked U.S. Elnett page uses “Unscented” in the product name and says the formula is fragrance-free, yet the ingredient list on that same page includes Fragrance. HomeWise records the conflict rather than choosing one statement as correct. Readers buying specifically for fragrance avoidance should recheck the package sold to them.
Dove: a described propellant that is not named
Dove says Control & Shine uses a non-greenhouse-gas propellant, while the displayed ingredients do not identify that propellant by chemical name. It therefore has its own “unnamed gas” class instead of being guessed into HFC-152a, DME, or no-propellant.
How to use the findings when shopping
| Your question | What to check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| I want a spray without compressed-gas propellant. | Look for pump, non-aerosol, no-gas, or a full list with no named propellant. | Do not assume this also excludes Alcohol Denat or Fragrance. |
| I want no Alcohol Denat. | Check Alcohol Denat and named denatured-alcohol synonyms. Pantene and Ouidad listed no such ingredient; Design Essentials published only Alcohol, leaving denaturation unspecified. | Do not treat “pump” and “alcohol-free” as synonyms. |
| I want no generic Fragrance/Parfum listing. | Vanicream was the only checked list without either term. | Do not treat “unscented” marketing as enough when the ingredient list disagrees. |
| I want flexible rather than maximum hold. | Use the brand’s hold description as a starting point, then compare application directions and recent verified reviews. | Do not compare “level 3,” “maximum,” and “72 hours” as if brands use one standard scale. |

HomeWise Research methodology
- Research completed: 24 August 2026
- Products checked: 30
- Primary sources consulted: 32 (30 official product pages plus Health Canada and California Air Resources Board context)
- Additional sources: 1 plain-language aerosol explainer
- Research type: Product or Brand Claim Audit
- Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No
- Last verified: 24 August 2026
Selection. We chose one currently listed finishing hairspray from each of 30 brands across mass, salon, and prestige pricing, including aerosol and pump formats and a range of hold claims. We excluded dry shampoo, texture spray, root-lift spray, mousse, heat protectant, and discontinued product pages. This is a deliberately broad cross-market sample, not a market-share-weighted census.
Collection and calculations. For each product, we retained the exact official source URL, the published ingredient evidence, and the date checked. HFC-152a and dimethyl ether were classified from named ingredients. “No propellant listed” was limited to verified pump/non-aerosol products. Percentages use all 30 rows as the denominator and are rounded to one decimal place. The main chart uses mutually exclusive propellant classes, while ingredient prevalence counts may overlap. Alcohol classification uses the named denatured-alcohol terms explained above: 22 first-position and five second-position records. The Design Essentials row remains separate as unspecified Alcohol; its original CSV classification is retained as an identified source-normalization error, not silently refreshed.
Source verification. Automated HTTP checks succeeded for 25 official pages. Five official sites returned an explained 403 automation block (TRESemmé, Dove, Nexxus, Bumble and bumble, and Aveda) after their page evidence had been inspected and retained. No source had an unexplained verification failure.
Limitations. Formulas can vary by market, size, or reformulation date. Ingredient order does not reveal concentration. Brand hold scales are not standardized. We did not test spray pattern, residue, scent, hold duration, flammability, exposure, environmental impact, or hair feel. This page reports labels and claims checked on August 24, 2026, not clinical or safety conclusions. The Color Wow source is the UK 250ml full-size formula; its DME-only row is not a verified US or travel-size classification. The current UK page lists both HFC-152a and DME for the 50ml size. A partial source check on October 1, 2026 confirmed the Design Essentials wording and this size distinction; the full 30-source dataset has not been refreshed.
